Research Interests and Teaching Activities

Primary research interests lie in elucidating the causes of osteoporosis and related fractures, with particular focus on 1) homocysteine, B vitamins and their potential roles in the etiology of bone loss and fractures; 2) nutritional risk factors for osteoporosis and how they interact with genes to influence bone health; and 3) the identification of risk factors for falls and resulting hip fractures among elders. Dr. McLean's teaching activities include leading tutorials for the Clinical Epidemiology course for first-year medical students at Harvard Medical School (AC701) and serving as a teaching assistant for Intermediate Epidemiology at the Boston University School of Public Health. He has been a guest lecturer on the nutritional epidemiology of osteoporosis at Boston University, presented hospital grand rounds on evidence-based medicine and critical appraisal of research proposals, and has led sessions at annual scientific meetings on epidemiologic methods and the interpretation of research studies.
