Mental Health & Aging Development & Training in Research Methods

Development & Training in Research Methods

The UNDERSTANDING DISPARITIES IN MENTAL STATUS ASSESSMENT project is substantively driven by a desire to understand education and racial/ethnic differences in cognitive functioning measures, but is also a major research methods study. We apply methods developed in educational assessment research settings in geriatric epidemiologic research, and evaluate the performance of different methods using computerized simulation studies. The application of such methods in health research settings is relatively new, and never before have the methods been assessed using simulation methods - a standard validation approach - in the context of assessing adult cognitive performance.

We conduct a WORKSHOP ON LATENT VARIABLE METHODS IN AGING RESEARCH each summer, holding our weeklong course at Harvard Medical School. Each year participants (graduate students, statisticians, and other researchers) attend our workshop from around the country, where we share our knowledge and experience applying advanced psychometric models in measurement and evaluation.

We also collaborate with investigators and educators from the University of California, Davis, University of Washington (Seattle), and Columbia University as organizers and faculty of a weeklong workshop on psychometric methods in cognitive aging research. These workshops are typically held at the Friday Harbor Biological Research Laboratories on San Juan Island, Washington.
