Kiel Named President of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research

Washington, DC – Douglas P. Kiel, M.D., M.P.H., has taken office as the new president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), the world’s leading scientific organization for bone health research.

“My career is devoted to research on the prevention of osteoporotic fractures and musculoskeletal decline,” said Dr. Kiel. “My involvement in ASBMR has helped to refine and advance my research and connect me with other leaders. I look forward to my time leading this organization along with my esteemed colleagues in the musculoskeletal field.”

Dr. Kiel serves as the Director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center and Senior Scientist for the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife. He is also a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on the epidemiology of osteoporosis and related fractures, including lifestyle factors, biomarkers and genetic factors. He is also interested in research regarding the consequences of sarcopenia, including falls and disability. He has conducted multiple clinical trials targeting the musculoskeletal system and leads the Framingham Osteoporosis Study.

Dr. Kiel began his career at Brown University School of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine. He came to Harvard Medical School in 1992 when he joined what was then known as the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for Aged Research and Training Institute (now called the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife).

Dr. Kiel has served as past Chair of the Research Committee of the American Geriatrics Society, was a founding member of the Clinical Trials Advisory Panel of the National Institute on Aging, and was a contributing author to the Surgeon General’s Report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis and the Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking. He has also served on the Scientific Advisory Committee and the Education Committee of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Dr. Kiel has served on multiple NIH study sections and editorial boards, including The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, The Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and the Journal of Clinical Densitometry. After serving a year as President-Elect, Dr. Kiel will serve as President of ASBMR until September 2016.
