5 Ways to Boost Your Well-Being in the New Year
Recommendations from a Hebrew SeniorLife geriatrician to support healthy aging.
As a geriatrician at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham, MA, I spend a lot of time talking with my patients about simple changes that can support healthier aging. Many of those changes center around what we call the 4Ms framework of age-friendly care: what matters most, mobility, mind, and medications.
As we wrap up 2025, here are five New Year’s resolutions inspired by that framework to motivate you to focus on your well-being in the new year:
1. Make the time to try something new.
Doing something new is a great way to keep your brain engaged and make new friends. New experiences don’t have to be big or overwhelming: you might pick up a puzzle, join a book club, or try knitting for the first time. Lifelong learning in all its forms helps build cognitive reserve, the brain’s buffer that protects against age-related decline and even dementia.
Many towns and cities deliver engaging programs through libraries, community centers, and senior centers, making it easier to find an activity you enjoy and meet people with shared interests. At NewBridge on the Charles, our residents enjoy a robust calendar of enriching programming, including clubs, guest speakers, and performances.
2. Maintain physical activity that supports your body.
Staying active as we age can require thoughtful goal setting and purposeful decision-making. If possible, aim to walk 3,000 to 5,000 steps per day. If that’s a bit too much, consider shorter walks, yoga, tai chi, swimming, or any gentle form of movement that you enjoy.
If you’re looking for guidance, Hebrew SeniorLife’s Get Up & Go outpatient senior fitness program offers personalized support from trained coaches who understand the needs of older adults. Whether or not you live in a Hebrew SeniorLife community, the program can help you set approachable fitness goals and build confidence in your movement.
3. Aim to get sunlight every day.
Did you know that even 10 to 20 minutes of sunlight each day can help regulate your sleep patterns, improve your mood, and provide the vitamin D you need for better health?
Your resolution to get more sunlight might look like:
- Taking a daily walk outdoors
- Sipping your morning coffee or tea by a sunny window
- Stepping outside to enjoy the fresh air in the morning
In the darker winter months, when getting outside may be more difficult, a 10,000 lux sun lamp can be a helpful alternative. These lamps are especially beneficial for those who experience seasonal affective disorder or depression.
For NewBridge on the Charles residents, the 100-acre nature preserve and scenic walking trails along the Charles River make it both easy and enjoyable to get outside whenever the weather allows.
4. Give yourself peace of mind by updating your health care proxy.
Health care proxies are designated individuals who can speak and make decisions for you if you are ever unable to do so for yourself. Picking a proxy is an important step because it helps your care team understand your wishes and gives you peace of mind knowing your future needs will be met. Ultimately, it’s a way to prepare for the unexpected!
5. Define what matters most to you.
Think about what makes you feel purposeful and connected. Maybe it’s spending more time with family and friends, improving your health, or trying a new hobby. Defining what matters to you can help you make decisions that feel intentional and true to yourself.
When you share what matters to you with your health care proxy and physicians, it helps them better understand you and can make your care even more personal. Many people haven’t taken the time to reflect in this way, but taking a little time to do so can set you up for an even more meaningful year.
Building a healthier foundation in the new year
For many, the new year serves as an opportunity for setting intentions. What habits or priorities are you hoping to carry forward? What do you wish you did more of in your daily life? Taking time to look ahead can help you lay the groundwork for a health-focused and intentional 2026.
