Dr. Dae Hyun Kim Promoted to Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School
Harvard’s highest academic rank recognizes Dr. Kim’s extraordinary contributions to research, teaching, clinical care, and mentorship in aging
Dae Hyun Kim, MD, MPH, ScD, a nationally recognized geriatrician and associate director and senior scientist at the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife, has been promoted to professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. This promotion to the highest academic rank at Harvard Medical School recognizes Kim’s extraordinary contributions to research, teaching, clinical care, and mentorship in the field of aging.
Dr. Kim’s career reflects a deep commitment to improving health outcomes for older adults. He earned his MD from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, in 2001, followed by a master of public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2005 and a doctor of science in epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2014. He completed his internal medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and subsequently trained in geriatric medicine through the Harvard Medical School Multi-Campus Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine.
Early in his faculty career, Dr. Kim received the prestigious National Institute on Aging Beeson Award, which launched his pioneering research on frailty. This area has since become central to improving care for older adults nationwide. At the Marcus Institute, he has established a world-class, federally funded research program focused on measuring frailty and understanding its impact on patient outcomes across various clinical settings.
Dr. Kim’s research infrastructure enables large-scale analyses of Medicare claims and electronic medical record data to identify frailty in older patients and evaluate their responses to medical interventions. His claims-based frailty index has been adopted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and is being implemented for calculation across Medicare beneficiaries nationwide — representing a major advancement in population-level aging research and health policy.
A dedicated educator and mentor, Kim has trained more than 50 trainees and early-career faculty and has authored over 250 original research publications. His excellence in mentorship has been recognized with the NIA K24 Mid-Career Mentoring Award and the 2024 A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School.
Kim’s scientific leadership has also earned national honors, including the 2023 Thomas and Catherine Yoshikawa Outstanding Scientific Achievement in Clinical Investigation Award from the American Geriatrics Society and election to the American Society of Clinical Investigation in 2024.
In recognition of his academic accomplishments, leadership, and commitment to mentoring, Kim was recently named associate director of the Marcus Institute, further strengthening Hebrew SeniorLife’s role as a global leader in aging science.
